Recovery from addiction isn’t just about overcoming physical dependence—it’s also about addressing the emotional and spiritual wounds that can fuel the cycle. While modern psychology offers valuable tools and therapies to support healing, a Christian-based approach adds another layer by grounding recovery in biblical truth. This faith-centered perspective doesn’t replace the practical strategies of psychology—it works alongside them to bring deeper transformation and lasting hope.
At The Fullbrook Center, we believe recovery isn’t just about stopping harmful behavior. We aim to help you rebuild a life rooted in truth, love, and lasting meaning. From faith-based intervention to detox, inpatient care, and women-only outpatient care, we’re here to help you at every stage. What Is Christian-Based Recovery, and How Does It Work?
Christian-based recovery is a treatment model that incorporates evidence-based therapy practices and applies them through the lens of Scripture. In 2 Timothy 3:16, Paul tells us, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” The author of Hebrews takes it further: “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword … and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (4:12). While traditional recovery programs focus on changing one’s self, Christian-based recovery acknowledges the need for God’s help, turning our gaze from inward to upward.
Rather than viewing addiction as a mental health or behavioral issue, this approach helps us get to the root of our situation and rely on God. The goal is to recover not just because we want to, but because we desire to live a life that is pleasing to Him. The Christian-based recovery model focuses on spiritual counseling, prayer, and meditating on God’s word. Psalm 1 tells us that we will be blessed (happy) if we meditate on God’s word day and night—we’ll be “like a tree firmly planted by streams of water” (1:3).
Why Some People Struggle with Secular Treatment Alone
Secular treatment has helped a lot of people resolve a lot of issues. In fact, it is often called “evidence-based” treatment because scientific studies have been done that show that these modalities can be effective. But secular treatment, try as it might, does not get to the true root of our problems. This is because we are all in need of a Savior.
Perhaps you’ve heard of something called the “Romans Road,” which can illustrate why on earth we need to be saved. The Romans Road is a series of verses from a book in the New Testament called Romans; it was a letter written by the apostle Paul to the first-century church located in Rome. This series of verses shows our need for a Savior by first giving us the bad news, and then the Good News.
“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23.
God, who created us, is so infinitely holy, just, and righteous that His standard must be perfection. None of us, no matter how good we think we are, meets His standard of perfection.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23
The punishment for sin from a holy and just God is death. Because we have all sinned, we are all guilty. But this isn’t the end of the story, as you will see as you continue along the Gospel message.
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8
Thankfully, it’s not all bad news! God is also a God of infinite love. And He loved us so much that Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, came to earth to die in our place. Jesus was crucified, according to prophecies in the Old Testament, and then was resurrected from the dead three days later, also according to the Scriptures. Just before Jesus died on the cross, He said, “It is finished.” This was an accounting term. He has paid the debt for our sins.
“… if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved…. for whoever calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.” – Romans 10:9,13
When we call out in faith to Jesus for salvation—when we trust in Him and make Him Lord of our life—we are saved.
While this doesn’t mean that all our problems—like addiction—immediately melt and disappear, it does mean that God has given us new life.
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ–by grace you have been saved.” – Ephesians 2:4-5
“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
The Role of Scripture and Prayer in Christian-Based Recovery
What makes Christian-based recovery distinct is not just the presence of something called “faith,” but how that faith is focused on the one true God.
“I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God.” – Isaiah 45:5
Here are some of the ways Scripture and prayer can help during Christian-based recovery:
- Meditating on the Book of Psalms can provide encouragement when emotions are heavy.
- Meditating on the faithfulness of God and His sovereignty can help your trust in Him grow stronger.
- Other Scriptures provide truth to guide us and help us know how to pray along with God’s will.
- Prayer allows those who believe in Jesus Christ to bare their souls to our heavenly Father. As the apostle Peter writes, “casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
This environment may provide a new way of thinking for you. Maybe you’ve been trying to white knuckle through your sobriety on your own. Maybe you’ve tried all of the secular modalities and you still feel empty. You may be surprised how many Christian testimonies there are of women who were at absolute rock bottom—women who had tried everything else—when God saved them.
There is hope.
“Why are you cast down, O my soul, And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.” – Psalm 42:11
“I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” – Psalm 4:8
