Professional Women With Substance Abuse
With the added pressures executive women, managers, and other professionals face in their work each day, they often turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse. According to SAMHSA, 12.1% of women who hold managerial positions misuse substances. Of all occupations participating in this survey, this was the third-highest rate of substance abuse.
This high rate of substance abuse among professional women could be attributed to a number of causes, such as:
- Financial stressors
- Performance standards and expectations
- Family or home issues
- Imposter syndrome: the feeling of not being qualified for the position you’re in
- Risk-taking mentality
Stressful life and work situations are something that most people experience, but professional women may experience these pressures to a higher degree. There is often an innate desire for women to provide, and when aspects of their work or home lives interfere with this ability, the result can be damaging to their psyche. If these women turn to a substance to manage their emotions, even more damage may take place.
Types of Executive Substance Abuse Treatment Programs We Offer
Effective addiction treatment for executive women can consist of inpatient treatment or outpatient programs, depending on the particular addiction(s) and level of care needed. Our rehab center addresses the root issues related to addiction while practicing discretion so that you can receive drug and alcohol treatment without fear of professional repercussions.
Our treatment model incorporates a variety of evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including:
Medical detox – For anyone whose substance use cannot be stopped without experiencing withdrawal, a detox program will be necessary. Our goal is to ensure that our patients feel comfortable and safe during their detox process. Medical professionals will administer medications to help patients control their drug cravings and to help them feel more comfortable during withdrawal from alcohol or drugs.
Inpatient program – Often called “residential program”, this is a dual diagnosis program often more appropriate for women with substance use disorders who relapse frequently, have had addiction problems in the past, or have some other addiction or medical issue that requires them to stay in a treatment center. Women will stay at our rehab center for the duration of their treatment which can last anywhere from 30 to 90 days, or longer, depending on how your treatment team evaluates your progress in recovery.
Partial Hospitalization (PHP) with housing – This is a comprehensive level of care that serves as an extension of inpatient treatment, offering women the necessary time and support to heal from addiction and past traumas.
Executive outpatient treatment – We would recommend this level of care after the completion of our residential program. Outpatient can vary in intensity and frequency depending on your needs. It is most suitable for women who need less supervision and want to return to work, go to school, or have family lives.
Aftercare planning – Aftercare plans play a vital role in providing women with ongoing recovery support. This includes recommendations for outpatient treatment programs, intensive outpatient rehab resources, support groups, individual therapy, and sober living options. Our dedicated team ensures women have access to a range of resources to maintain their recovery and prevent relapse.

Treatment Types Used in Our Women’s Only Rehab Program for Professionals
The Fullbrook Center uses a highly flexible treatment approach that allows us to provide a wide range of treatment options to fit the individual needs of our patients. Some treatment options that are offered to professional women in Texas include:
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) – DBT is a treatment that has been proven to reduce substance use in women with complicated mental health issues. Using DBT, we can concurrently treat your addiction and the mental health issues that drive it.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) – CBT has been shown to be highly effective in treating alcohol and drug addiction. The cornerstone of CBT is teaching women how to deal with their cravings and the triggers, such as negative thoughts, known as cognitive distortions.
Motivational interviewing (MI) – Motivational interviewing focuses on helping women feel more confident about their ability to make healthy decisions and to recognize that they have innate abilities and resources to help them obtain life-long sobriety. This is a goal-oriented therapy that helps women overcome their fear of change.
Equine therapy program – Fullbrook Center utilizes the transformative power of equine therapy to support women on their journey to recovery from addiction and trauma. Through engaging activities and meaningful horse interactions, this experiential treatment fosters self-exploration, emotional awareness, and personal growth.
Stress management – Part of the drug rehab and recovery process for professional women is learning how to manage stress in a productive manner, without relying on addictive substances. Recent studies have made it increasingly clear that mindfulness-based stress management can be helpful for preventing relapses and managing stress.
