What is a Medically Supervised Detox Program?

A medically supervised detox program is a structured and specialized treatment program designed to help women safely and comfortably withdraw from alcohol or drug addiction. It is often the first step in a larger addiction treatment plan, aiming to address the physical aspects of addiction while also providing support and resources to women as they begin their recovery journey. With medical supervision, women can feel comfortable during the drug detox process without sacrificing their mental health.

When Does a Woman Need a Medical Detox Program?

The majority of women who are seeking substance abuse treatment will need to begin their recovery with an addiction detox program. Detox is appropriate for any woman who is currently using drugs or alcohol on a regular basis and who experiences withdrawal symptoms during periods of sobriety. Unlike outpatient programs, a medical detox program offers the level of accountability needed to complete detox treatment successfully. Medically assisted detox may also be necessary for women who have recently relapsed, depending on the severity of the situation and the types of substances involved.

Detox treatment is recommended for women who:

  • Regularly used an addictive substance in large amounts
  • Regularly craved an addictive substance when access to it was limited
  • Required increasing amounts of an addictive substance to achieve the usual effect
  • Attempted to quit using an addictive substance but found it was impossible
  • Used an addictive substance over an extended period of time

The Dangers of Withdrawal

It can be impossible for women to predict how serious their withdrawal symptoms will be until they are in the midst of them, which is a dangerous situation. For this reason, it’s critical for women to seek a quality medical detox facility in Texas when they decide to stop using drugs or alcohol.

Depending on the substances abused, women can suffer from a variety of withdrawal symptoms. Some of the most common withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Sensitivity to light or touch
  • Muscle and body aches

Women may also experience psychological symptoms that make the physical symptoms worse. These can include:

  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Depression
  • Mood swings

Depending on the substance(s) women are addicted to, how long they have been actively addicted, and their overall health in general, their symptoms will range in severity.

What to Expect at The Fullbrook Center’s Women’s Only Medical Detox Facility

Our medical detox center provides the necessary care and support to safely and comfortably begin the recovery process. At The Fullbrook Center, our women can expect a range of services to help them navigate the challenges of detoxification.

During your stay, you will be monitored by medical professionals who will ensure your health, nutrition, and mental stability are taken care of. They will also work to safely cleanse your body of harmful toxins and, if needed, administer medications to mitigate discomfort.

The Three Stages of Medical Detox

During the first stage, women may begin to feel withdrawal symptoms within a few hours of ceasing drug or alcohol use. These symptoms can vary in severity and may include insomnia, anxiety, sweating, headaches, nausea/vomiting, and loss of appetite.

The second stage of detoxing is often the most difficult. As more intense withdrawal symptoms arise, psychological symptoms may begin to appear. A small percentage of women may experience delirium tremens (DT), which can cause extreme physical and psychological effects such as hallucinations, paranoia, seizures, disorientation, and dehydration.

Around day four, withdrawal symptoms generally start to subside. However, depending on a woman’s addiction history, some symptoms may persist for weeks or months. While the worst is typically over at this point, medical professionals will continue to monitor your overall stability.

Once detox is complete, we will provide you with various treatment options so you can continue your addiction recovery journey without relapse.
