Do All Alcoholics Need Detox?

Not all alcoholics need detox, but most do. Acute alcohol withdrawal can be extremely dangerous, so you must find the right program for you or your loved one. The most important components are keeping you safe and comfortable.

There are a few different types of detox programs.

At The Fullbrook Center, we offer 24/7 medical care in a home away from home setting, providing comfort and safety for you or your loved one. Our highly trained medical team will monitor your withdrawal symptoms and provide medications when needed. This 24-hour monitoring allows you to detox without severe withdrawal symptoms and in minimal physical discomfort. The average length of stay at our detox program is 5-7 days.

At times, a higher medical acuity detox program is needed. Detoxing in a hospital setting can be beneficial for women with a history of severe decompensation during withdrawal. While it is not typical, some, often older individuals, will lose the ability to care for themselves during detox. They cannot complete their normal activities of daily living (ADLs) and need assistance with bathing, getting in and out of bed, and using the restroom. For this individual, a hospital-based detox would be the best option.

What Women Should Expect When Detoxing from Alcohol at The Fullbrook Center

When entering a women’s alcohol detox program, it can be overwhelming; here is what you can expect.

At The Fullbrook Center, the purpose of detox is to provide medical supervision to help you cleanse your body and mind of harmful substances. Each individual’s detox will vary based on the length and severity of their alcohol use disorder and overall health. It is impossible to know precisely what the withdrawal process will look like, so you must find the right women’s alcohol detox program to adequately monitor your detox symptoms, keeping you safe and comfortable.

In our medical alcohol detox, you will be seen by our Medical Director and their team. They will conduct a thorough health examination and create a specialized detox plan tailored to your needs.

Withdrawal symptoms you or your loved one might experience are:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Sensitivity to light or touch
  • Muscle and body aches

Some women also experience psychological symptoms during the alcohol detox process: These can include:

  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Depression
  • Mood swings

Post-Acute-Withdrawal-Syndrome (PAWS) is a set of impairments that can occur in some women for weeks or months after they quit drinking. While these are not generally life-threatening symptoms, speaking to a medical professional can be beneficial.

During the detox process, you or your loved one will get to meet and begin working with women who are mentors in our program. Connecting with the women who have come before you is an essential component of the recovery process and provides the foundation for rebuilding your life.

Once your alcohol detox program is complete, you transition into our residential level of care with a clear mind and body, setting you up to receive the maximum benefit of the therapeutic work provided at The Fullbrook Center.

Medically Supervised Alcohol Detox Program

The Fullbrook Center has a specialized medically managed alcohol detox program for women. Medically supervised detox is a detoxification process supervised 24/7 by trained medical staff.

During this process, our trained professionals utilize a variety of medications to keep you safe and comfortable. They monitor your withdrawal symptoms while routinely checking your blood pressure, pulse, and temperature to help determine if more medications are needed and that you are not at risk of more severe withdrawal symptoms.

Our medical team does an in-depth screening to determine if you need a medically supervised alcohol detox. There are a few different criteria our team looks for. If you have tried to stop drinking in the past and experienced withdrawal symptoms like shakes, sweats, or the inability to sleep, you would meet the criteria for medical detox.

Some of our clients have not tried to stop on their own but have been drinking daily for a significant period; these women would also meet the criteria for our alcohol medical detox program. Additionally, if you have a history of seizures, our medical team places you on a specific protocol for monitoring during detoxification.

At The Fullbrook Center, the most crucial piece is that you are safe and have a well-versed medical team at your side! We will continually monitor you and your withdrawal symptoms until you are cleared by our medical team.

Detoxing from alcohol without medical intervention can be dangerous, even deadly. Alcohol withdrawal can cause delirium tremens, hallucinations, and even seizures. We urge you not to try to detox at home. Please call The Fullbrook Center today!
